Defying natural laws
This week, my Pastor Tony Collins brought up laws of nature, like law of gravity and inertia.
This reminded me of two things:
- Highschool physics class when I jumped off bleachers in our gym and broke my ankle
- a wonderful conversation I had with a businessman in Papua New Guinea
Theory over coffee
On my way home from my last trip to PNG, I had to stay overnight in Port Moresby, the capital of PNG.
I had some time to kill before my hotel room was ready so I went to the cafe in the lobby and with all tables occupied, I asked a business man with laptop open if I could share his table.
I didn’t mean to distract him from his work but we ended up striking up a conversation and one topic led to another and when he heard I was talking to the students at RVA about aerodynamics he shared this analogy he learned from his pasto
Overcoming Natural Laws
In this world, at have natural laws that are constantly working on us. Such one law is the law of gravity. It is pulling us down 24/7.
But there are also laws that can overcome these natural laws like the laws of aerodynamics that allows us to fly and overcome gravity!
And so is the case in our spiritual world where our natural laws to sin are always working against us. But there’s the law of Jesus that can overcome sin!
Applying constantly
But as with the laws of aerodynamics, these laws must be constantly applied in order to keep overcoming the natural laws, our default setting.
Without continuous momentum, there is no lift and without constantly walking with God we will fall too.
Oh how I wish I had met him before I taught the students about aerodynamics and kites!
You are probably aware that flying requires a lot of energy.
Especially in the initial build up of momentum requires hard constant work. Once you are airborne, the air thins and creates less drag.
Higher you can soar, the thinner the air gets making it easier to maintain the forward momentum, but as you can see with birds, you still need to flap your wings time to time to maintain altitude.
But once you are soaring, it’s a wonderful feeling to see the world in a new way!
